Lauren Goodman salvages Eindhoven Trash to make usable furniture

The collection, touted Eindhoven Project, is the third iteration of the designer’s foray into place-based design.

Sight Unseen

Saturday Selects

From Dutch Design Week: furniture by Lauren Goodman made from foraged and discarded objects. A russet-toned chair is made from what appears to be metal grates and stacked cubes, while a bright blue stool with a scoop-shaped seat sits atop a bent pole. Both exude an industrial vibe, with an Italian Radical Design flair. The pieces were shown in Eindhoven as part of a group exhibition titled No Time For High Fives, which featured other experiments with upcycling, localization, zero waste, and the use of organic and biodegradable materials

Design Awards Issue 2022

In the fall of 2020, Lauren Goodman, a student at the Rhode Island School of Design, decided on a whim to dig through a nearby scrap-metal bin. The materials she collected — industrial offcuts, steel tubing, rebar — became the basis for the Providence Project, a suite of welded furniture comprising a stool, a chair and a table. The work explores the creative possibilities embedded in seemingly worthless objects. It’s also an experiment in place- based design; had she done this project elsewhere, it would’ve been completely different — though surely no less inventive.

Best recycled designs 2022

Contemporary designers are using waste to create furniture designs that combine a distinctive aesthetic with a sustainable approach.

Design students are also addressing this important issue. Lauren Goodman, a recent graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, featured among Wallpaper’s 22 Rising Stars in the January 2022 issue (W*273). As part of her MA graduation show in furniture design, she wrote a thesis pointing out that there were ‘undervalued items everywhere. Pure potential tossed in the ditch while thinking this trash is someone else’s problem. Maybe it could be my problem. I could create second chances and see value all around me.’ This thinking became central to her ‘Providence Project’, a series of experimental furniture designs made from things Goodman salvaged from skips around Providence, Rhode Island. ‘I aim to draw from my surroundings a narrative of what Providence looks like as furniture,’ she says.

The January Next Generation issue – highlighting cutting-edge creativity that is shaping the future

“Having noticed how undervalued items are everywhere, Goodman decided to do something with the ‘pure potential tossed in the ditch’ by ‘transforming the lives of objects that have been cast away and forgotten’. Her Providence Project is a series of experimental furniture designs made from discarded materials found in the Providence area.”

The Design Edit

TDE’s top picks from the New York design platform for emerging designers.

An alumnus of the Rhode Island School of Design, Goodman developed ‘The Providence Project’ using discarded and abandoned materials she discovered around the city. She reshaped the metal pieces to create her designs. Her minimalist, delicate design sensibility subtly draws attention to alternative material resources, whilst infusing poetry into the upcycling dialogue.
